Behind this Smile: A Conversation Series

Sunday, Jan 31, 2016
Take a look at PPP's first conversation series: Behind This Smile! We had around 50 students join in the filming of this video, and we are so excited to open up conversations about what is behind our smiles. Oftentimes, there is something else going on behind the smiling face of a student on campus. Whether this is stress, genuine contentedness, or anxiety, it is important we discuss the emotions underneath the surface.

"The end result, earning an Ivy League degree, says nothing about the journey that was taken to get there. To someone else who may not know the back story, my degree, my track and field success, and my involvement in artistic groups and volunteer groups may appear to be the results of effortless perfection. Such could not be further from the truth."

"The truth is, none of us have really figured it out. Some of us have had more time to reflect on these issues than others, but we all deal with the same pressure of appearing a certain way and assuming that people see us a certain way and feeling like we don't live up to those expectations."

"Being a student athlete here as well was tough. When I would have those hard moments academically, I would have to turn that around right away and step on the court...The hardest times would be when neither of those were working."

"I don't balance everything. I definitely have moments of being overwhelmed and really, really anxious. But, I think admitting it and also being able to rely on the people around you is important...We all have those moments."

"We need to celebrate hard work on this campus and that we're not all just 'secret geniuses' who can pull everything off in the last minute. That's certainly not me."
